CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 3, 2018) – Rutgers University-Camden junior guard
Brennah Lambert (Lindenwold, NJ/Sterling) completed Saturday's New Jersey Athletic Conference game with only three points, but they may have been the biggest points of the day for the Scarlet Raptors.
Lambert,
pictured above, banked a desperation three-point attempt off the glass and through the hoop as time expired in regulation to tie the game, completing a fourth-quarter comeback that saw the Scarlet Raptors rally from a 12-point deficit. Given a second chance, the Rutgers-Camden women's basketball team scored the first eight points in overtime and went on to stun Kean University, 74-68.
With their fifth straight victory, the Scarlet Raptors raised their record to 13-8 overall and 10-5 in the NJAC. Kean, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped, falls to 9-12 overall and 6-9 in the conference.
The victory marked the first time the Raptors have swept a regular-season series against the Cougars since the 1998-99 season. It was the first time they won two games against Kean since their NJAC championship season of 2002-03, when they went 2-1 against the Cougars. One of those wins came in the NJAC semifinals.
Kean now leads the all-time series, 48-21.
The Scarlet Raptors trailed, 50-38, after Kean freshman guard/forward
Casey Filiault (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) hit a jumper to open the fourth quarter. Rutgers-Camden scored the next nine points, however, to slice the margin to 50-47. The Raptors trailed, 54-51, before the Cougar scored back-to-back layups by sophomore forward/center
De'Mean Bond (Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) to pad their lead to 58-51 with 3:30 remaining.
Rutgers-Camden responded with back-to-back treys by junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) and freshman guard
Shane Holmes (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), making it a 58-57 game with 2:37 remaining. Kean, however, scored five of the next seven points, three on foul shots by sophomore guard
Payce Lange (Tewksbury, NJ/Voorhees), who went 13-for-14 from the foul line in the game on her way to 15 points. Her shot with 15 seconds remaining made it a 63-59 game, but Greene hit another trey with five seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 63-62.
Once again, Lange seemed to ice the game with a pair of foul shots with five seconds remaining, but Lambert's heroics sent the game into overtime, where Rutgers-Camden ran away with the victory.
Rutgers-Camden scored the first eight overtime points – four by senior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and two apiece by sophomore guard
Lajerah Wright (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) and senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) – to build a 73-65 lead with 2:43 remaining. They went on to their six-point victory, giving them two improbable overtime victories this season when they trailed by three points in the last second of regulation. Earlier in the year, the Raptors tied Stockton University on three clutch foul shots by Greene with 0.2 seconds left in regulation before winning in overtime.
Greene finished with a game-high 23 points for the Scarlet Raptors, including 5-for-5 shooting from three-point range that raised her career-leading total to 198 treys. Her 23 points, meanwhile, hiked her career total over the 900 plateau to 908 and her one assist helped her hit the 200 milestone for her career.
Racobaldo finished with 19 points and game-high totals of eight assists and nine steals. The nine steals tied her career high, set against Ramapo College Jan. 17, 2015. The eight assists hiked her own program career mark to 475.
Obasi, meanwhile, posted the seventh double-double of her season and the 18th of her career, netting 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The rebounds gave her 761 for her career, allowing her to tie for sixth place on the program's all-time list with Kate Cranston (1997-2001). Obasi also added two assists to move into 15th place on the program's career list with 133.
Sophomore forward
Kirsten Flournoy (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) added six points and eight boards, while freshman guard
