WAYNE, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden and William Paterson University women's tennis teams were supposed to open their season here on August 31 with a New Jersey Athletic Conference match. That opener was postponed by rain, but the rescheduled match here Friday proved to be worth the wait for the Scarlet Raptors.
Â
Rutgers-Camden won all five of the singles matches in which it fielded a player and the Raptors added a win at first doubles to defeat the Pioneers, 6-3. The victory raises Rutgers-Camden's overall record to 4-1, matching the total number of wins the team compiled during a 4-8 campaign last year.
Â
More importantly, Rutgers-Camden is now 2-1 in the NJAC, good for second place in the standings. That record marks the first time the Scarlet Raptors have had a winning conference record through three matches since their program was restarted during the 2011-12 scholastic year. It also puts the team within one win of the program's most NJAC victories since the program was reborn. They were 3-3 in the NJAC during the 2013-14 campaign and they could tie that victory total Sunday when they host Kean University in a 12 p.m. NJAC match.
Â
Rutgers-Camden junior captain
Danielle Lemma posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles, while freshman
Tiffany Trivers earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles. Freshmen
LeAnne Hall, Morgan Dempsey and
Hannah Cohan earned singles wins at the third through fifth spot, respectively. Hall won by a 6-1, 6-4 score and Dempsey beat her opponent, 6-2, 6-4. Cohan rallied from a 6-3 first-set loss with 6-1 and 10-2 wins.
Â
Paterson won by default in the sixth singles and third doubles spots when Rutgers-Camden didn't field any players.
Â
In first doubles, the team of Lemma and Trivers posted an 8-0 victory as they raised their overall season record to 4-2. They are 4-1 in dual matches, with the other loss coming at the ITA Northeast Regionals last weekend. Trivers,
pictured above, also is 4-1 in singles play, tied with Hall for the best singles mark on the team.
Â
The team of Dempsey and Cohan dropped an 8-1 decision at second doubles in their first competition in the No. 2 spot after splitting four matches at third doubles.
