CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 6, 2018) – After collecting a historic season-opening victory Saturday with its first win ever against Stockton University, the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team was looking for a monumental upset here Thursday against perennial New Jersey Athletic Conference champion The College of New Jersey.
Â
The Scarlet Raptors, like the rest of the NJAC throughout history, weren't able to pull off that task.
Â
TCNJ, seeking its amazing 36th consecutive NJAC title this season, rolled to a 9-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden. The win raised the Lions' record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 1-1 and 1-1.
Â
Rutgers-Camden has been swept, 9-0, in all eight of its matches against TCNJ since the Raptors revived their women's tennis program in 2011.
Â
The Lions swept all three doubles and all six singles matches. The closest match in double came in the third flight, where freshmen
Hannah Cohan and
Morgan Dempsey lost, 8-2. At first doubles, junior
Danielle Lemma and freshman
Tiffany Trivers dropped an 8-1 decision. Junior
Aubrey Hawn and freshman
LeAnne Hall were defeated at second doubles, 8-0.
Â
Hall, at fourth singles, was the lone Raptor to take a game in both singles sets, losing, 6-1, 6-1. Hawn lost at first singles by a 6-0, 6-2 count, while Cohan was defeated at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0. Lemma lost at second singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Trivers was defeated at third singles, 6-0, 6-0. At fifth singles, TCNJ won by Dempsey's retirement.
Â
The Scarlet Raptors, ranked as the NJAC's "dark horse" team in a pre-season conference coaches' poll, have a big opportunity to make hay in the standings when they play a pair of road conference matches. They visit Ramapo College Saturday and Rutgers-Newark Sunday.
