MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 12, 2022) – Freshman
Lindsey Rodzon hurled a complete-game victory in the second game of a doubleheader here Tuesday to help the Rutgers University-Camden softball team earn a split of its New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Montclair State University.
The Red Hawks won the opener, 10-2, in a five-inning game before Rodzon and the Scarlet Raptors came back to win the nightcap, 4-1.
The split leaves Rutgers-Camden at 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the NJAC. Montclair State stands at 18-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
The Scarlet Raptors play a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Arcadia University, beginning at 4 p.m.
Montclair State 10, Rutgers-Camden 2
In a game called after five innings by the eight-run mercy rule, the Red Hawks exploded for six runs in the second inning and three more in the third to build a 9-1 lead.
Rutgers-Camden scored first, plating a run in the top of the second on a double by freshman third baseman
Luci Hutchinson and an RBI single by junior first baseman
Jayden Hunter. That lead was short-lived, however, when the Red Hawks used three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen in the bottom of the frame to produce six runs.
Trailing, 9-1, entering the fifth inning, the Scarlet Raptors temporarily held off an early finish to the game when Hunter walked and eventually scored on an error. Montclair State, however, re-established its eight-run lead and ended the game in the bottom of the frame on two hits, including an RBI game-ending single by catcher Danielle Sibilio.
Shortstop Alyssa Borozan led the eight-hit Red Hawk attack with a 3-for-3 day, while scoring three runs and driving home one. Left fielder Kayla Cosentino went 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Kayla Volante (9-3) picked up the win with a five-inning three-hitter, allowing only one earned run. Rodzon started and took the loss, dropping her record to 2-6.
Rutgers-Camden 4, Montclair State 1
The second game was completely different for Rodzon and the Scarlet Raptors as she scattered 10 hits and allowed only one run in a complete-game victory. Rodzon (3-6) walked four and struck out three while hurling shutout ball until the Red Hawks finally scored in the seventh inning.
Rutgers-Camden scored all the runs Rodzon needed in a two-run second inning. Hunter walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when an outfield throwing error followed a single by Hutchinson. Hutchinson was singled home by freshman right fielder
Emily Dubiago.
In the fourth inning, sophomore
Alexa McNee hit a one-out single, was sacrificed to second by Dubiago and scored on a double by senior center fielder
Kimmy Musarra. In the sixth inning, sophomore pinch-hitter
Zoe Rodriguez singled home sophomore catcher
Olivia Bull.
Musarra and Hutchinson both had two hits in the Scarlet Raptors' 10-hit attack.
