MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 13, 2023) – Just when the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team appeared to be on the verge of victory here Monday, Susquehanna University snatched the win away from the Scarlet Raptors.
After Rutgers-Camden broke a tie with a run in the top of the ninth inning, the River Hawks scored two times in the bottom of the ninth to post a 7-6 walkoff win at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Susquehanna improves to 9-3, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-5.
The two teams were locked at 5-5 entering the ninth inning, but a one-out single by sophomore first baseman
Andrew Brown put the go-ahead runner on base for the Scarlet Raptors. Sophomore pinch-runner
Sebastian Vega advanced to second on a balk and scored on a two-out double by senior
Jack Murphy, who started the game on the mound for the Scarlet Raptors before ending as the designated hitter.
Susquehanna senior left fielder Brock Veit opened the bottom of the ninth with a single and raced to third on a single by junior catcher Lance Book. Senior C.J. Latham pinch-ran for Book and stole second before Raptor freshman
Gavin Cunard got the first out of the frame on a strikeout. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Cunard notched another strikeout. With two outs, a passed ball allowed Veit to score the tying run. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Hmielewski followed with a game-winning single through the right side of the infield.
The dramatic finish capped a tight game that started with the Raptors scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a walk to senior second baseman

Susquehanna bounced back with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning on a pair of hit batsmen and two errors. The Scarlet Raptors briefly tied the game in the top of the fourth inning after a leadoff walk and a stolen base by Murphy. He scored one out later on a double to right by junior center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics.
The River Hawks broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Susquehanna's frame featured three straight singles, a pair of stolen bases, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the sixth, it was Rutgers-Camden's turn to forge a three-run inning, tying the score at 5-5. Murphy opened the frame with a double and was sacrificed to third by freshman catcher
Evan Carbone. He scored on a passed ball. Uzdanovics and freshman right fielder
Jacob Watson drew walks and advanced on stolen bases, eventually scoring on an infield error on a bunt by Vazquez.
Murphy went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored for Rutgers-Camden. Veit, Hmielewski and freshman second baseman Dylan Heyduk had two hits apiece for Susquehanna.
Sophomore Ryan Redmond (1-0), the last of three River Hawk pitchers, earned the win with three innings of relief work, allowing one run, two hits and one walk, while striking out four. Cunard (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs (only one earned) in 2.1 innings. He allowed three hits and four walks, while striking out four.
The Scarlet Raptors will continue play at The Ripken Experience on Tuesday when they face Suffolk University (Boston, Massachusetts) at 9 a.m.
