CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 12, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team saw five players score in double digits, with the balanced attack led by 19 points from junior guard
Jovan Childers (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), as it outlasted Baruch College, 75-70, in a non-conference game here Monday night.
The Scarlet Raptors improve to 7-2. The Bearcats fall to 4-5, snapping a four-game winning streak.
The teams switched leads four times in the opening half, with Rutgers-Camden finally taking the lead at 22-20 when sophomore guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter. That trey sparked a nine-point run, which included a field goal and foul shot from Childers and ended with another trey by Greene. By halftime the Raptors held a 43-36 lead and Greene had 11 points, including three treys. Childers added nine first-half points.
For Baruch, senior guard
Veronica Ganzi (Glendale, NY/St. Francis Prep) led all scorers at the half with 14 points. Senior center
Jacqueline Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep) canned 11 and completed a double-double in the opening 20 minutes with 10 rebounds. Junior guard/forward
Shannon Barrett (Middle Village, NY/Christ the King) added nine first-half points.
Early in the third quarter, the Scarlet Raptors opened up their lead to 12 points on two occasions (48-36 and 50-38), but the Bearcats kept clawing back into the game. Late in the fourth quarter, a 7-2 run cut the Scarlet Raptors' lead down to 68-66 when Barrett hit a layup with 59 seconds remaining. Clutch rebounding by senior forward/center
Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional), however, helped Rutgers-Camden stave off Baruch's comeback attempt. Santiago had four of her team-high 11 rebounds in the final minute, and added three foul shots.
With 13 seconds remaining, the Bearcats cut the gap to 73-70 on a trey by senior guard
Kristen Podlovits (Middle Village, NY/The Mary Louis Academy). Following a timeout, Childers was fouled and sank a pair of shots for the final margin.
Childers paced the Rutgers-Camden attack with 19 points, while junior center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) added 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots before fouling out late in the game. Greene, junior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and freshman guard/forward
Lajerah Wright (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) all scored 11 points.
Racobaldo and Childers collected six assists apiece, while Racobaldo added a game-high four steals. Racobaldo's six assists hiked her career total to 290, allowing her to tie for fourth place on the program's all-time list with Megan Crank (1992-96).
Baruch received a pair of double-doubles, with Kennedy notching 22 points and 16 boards, both game-high totals, while Barrett added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ganzi added 19 points for the Bearcats and Podlovits had a game-high seven assists.
Rutgers-Camden shot 29-for-66 (43.9 percent) from the floor while Baruch was 25-for-61 (41.0). The Raptors out-rebounded the Bearcats, 44-37.
Rutgers-Camden closes out the fall semester Wednesday night when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a 6 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game. After that contest, the Scarlet Raptors won't play again until the winter break, when they play a 1 p.m. contest at Hunter College on Dec. 30.
