CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Youth was the order of the day when the young Rutgers University-Camden and Alvernia University soccer teams battled into double overtime in a non-conference game here Wednesday night.
While the two non-conference teams are reloading with a lot of young talent, it was some veteran leadership that carried the Scarlet Raptors to a 1-0 victory.
Late in the second 10-minute overtime period, senior back
Dan Gilbert (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) dribbled into the box and was shoved down from behind by a freshman Alvernia defender. The resulting penalty kick was buried by Raptor junior
Aaron Muse (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), who distinguished himself both at center back and up top during the day. Muse's team-leading second goal of the season, which gave the Scarlet Raptors their first win, came with 3:43 remaining in the second overtime.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 1-0-1, while Alvernia falls to 0-3.
Although the Scarlet Raptors out-shot the Crusaders, 16-10, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, the game wasn't without its anxious moments for Rutgers-Camden. Late in the second half, senior back
Mike Naylor (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Regional) denied a shot ticketed for the net, clearing the ball off the goal line with about 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Moments later, sophomore goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made a great save off a header by Alvernia sophomore
Jarett Nast (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) that appeared destined for a goal.
Both Brett and his Alvernia counterpart, junior
Zach Rider (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) collected seven saves in the contest. Rider made a stellar save off a point-blank header by Raptor sophomore midfielder
Eric Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) early in the second half, which came off a restart from freshman midfielder
Patrick Grudnik (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick).
Rutgers-Camden returns home this weekend to host its 16th annual Cialella Soccer Classic. The Scarlet Raptors will face Farmingdale State College at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and The College at Brockport at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Crusaders play a neutral-site game on Saturday when they face Haverford College at Eastern University in a 2 p.m. contest.
