Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) collected her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and junior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) nearly added a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds as the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team posted a 69-40 victory over The College of New Jersey here Wednesday night.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 10-6 overall and 4-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, snapping a three-game losing streak. TCNJ, which had won three straight games, including a victory over previously-unbeaten and No. 8-ranked Montclair State University, falls to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the NJAC.
The win allowed Rutgers-Camden to sweep its season series against TCNJ. The Scarlet Raptors have won their last five games against the Lions, but TCNJ still holds a commanding 54-12 lead in the all-time series.
TCNJ got off to a quick start in the game, holding a pair of four-point leads (7-3 and 9-5) early in the first quarter before Rutgers-Camden fought back. The Raptors finally took the lead for good, 12-11, on a jumper by junior guard
Jovan Childers (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) with 2:08 left in the quarter. That started a six-point Raptor run to close out the quarter, with the last four points coming on layups by Santiago, making it a 16-11 game.
By late in the second quarter, the Raptors had built their lead to 16 points (37-21) before settling for a 37-23 halftime lead. TCNJ never came closer than 11 points (41-30) the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) finished with a game-high 18 points to lead four Raptors in double figures. She shot 6-for-13 from three-point range, tying her career high of treys, a total that is only two shy of the program's single-game record. She now owns 98 treys in her young career, needing only two more to become the fourth player in program history to reach 100 three-pointers in her career. Greene also added four assists.
Obasi, who is 11th on the program's all-time rebounding list, hiked her total to 503 with her big night, while raising her career points to 758. She shot 7-for-12 from the floor.
Santiago, who had six double-doubles as a junior in her first year at Rutgers-Camden, shot 5-for-8 from the floor and grabbed eight defensive rebounds among her 11 boards.
Childers finished with 11 points and a team-high five assists, while junior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched six points, nine defensive rebounds and three assists. Racobaldo, Childers and Obasi each added two steals.
TCNJ received 17 points from junior forward
Chiara Palombi (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan), while sophomore guard
Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) had seven points and a game-high seven assists.
The Lions shot only 16-for-61 (26.2 percent) from the floor, including 3-for-20 (15.0) from three-point range. Rutgers-Camden shot 29-for-62 (46.8) from the floor, including 7-for-19 (36.8) from three-point range. The Raptors also held a 45-36 advantage off the boards.
Both teams return to NJAC action Saturday. Rutgers-Camden hosts New Jersey City University at 1 p.m. TCNJ plays a 3 p.m. game at Kean University.
