CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 4, 2017) – The shorthanded Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team had to battle two opponents in its New Jersey Athletic Conference game against Ramapo College here Wednesday night.
Hit by a flu bug which sidelined several players and weakened many more, Rutgers-Camden dug deep to piece together a 48-35 victory over the Roadrunners in NJAC action. The Scarlet Raptors improve 9-3 overall and even their conference mark at 3-3. Ramapo falls to 6-6 and 1-5.
Rutgers-Camden has won its last five games against Ramapo College and leads the all-time series, 36-21.
The two teams battled to a 19-19 halftime tie in which the lead changed possession once and the game was deadlocked on three occasions. Junior guard
Jovan Childers (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) had eight points at halftime for the Scarlet Raptors, while junior center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) had six, hiking her career total over the 700-point plateau to 701. Junior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) grabbed nine rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
For Ramapo in the opening 20 minutes, six players dented the scoring column, led by senior forward
Bintou Berete (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck), with five points. Junior guard
Jina Crawford (New City, NY/Paramus Catholic) and freshman center
Jessica Repasy (Fredon, NJ/Kittatinny) both added four points.
Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good with a 14-5 run in the third quarter, holding the Roadrunners to only five foul shots. The Raptors took the lead for good, 22-21, on a layup by Racobaldo and opened up a 33-24 advantage by the end of the quarter. They led by as many as 16 points (47-31 and 48-32) in the fourth quarter.
Racobaldo finished with a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Childers scored a team-high 12 points, while sophomore guard
Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched 11. Obasi added 10 points. Senior center
Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional), despite being weakened with her return from the flu and being limited to 20 minutes, grabbed eight rebounds.
Ramapo received a team-high eight points from senior guard
Shelby Ringer (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro). Berete finished with seven and Crawford added six. Sophomore forward
Tia Solomon (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had a team-high 11 rebounds.
Both teams are home Saturday for 1 p.m. NJAC games. Ramapo faces The College of New Jersey, while Rutgers-Camden plays Kean University.
