CAMDEN, New Jersey (Oct. 14, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team went 2-0 here today as they defeated opponents Brooklyn College and John Jay College. In the middle match of the day, John Jay defeated Brooklyn by a final score of 3-1.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Brooklyn 0
In the first match of the day, the Scarlet Raptors swept Brooklyn in 3 sets, 25-8, 25-13, and 25-20.
Sophomore sisters
Jamie Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ, Pinelands Regional) and
Morgan Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ, Pinelands Regional) led the Scarlet Raptors in kills during the first match, providing 11 and 9, respectively. Freshman
Ashley Newman (Collegeville, PA, Methacton) also contributed 8 kills to the Scarlet Raptors' attack.
Freshman
Alyson Lowe (Havertown, PA, Haverford) dished out a team-high 15 assists, as sophomore
Caitlynn Marcano (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) added 12. Junior
Lauren Pace (Beachwood, NJ, Monsignor Donovan) provided 5.
Pace led the Scarlet Raptors defensive efforts with 15 digs versus Brooklyn.
Newman and
Lowe provided 9 and 6, respectively.
Brooklyn fought hard during a third set that saw back and forth action with lead changes, but the Scarlet Raptors would eventually end the first match of the day in 3 sets.
Marcano and junior
Myiah Gatling (Woolwich Township, NJ, Kingsway Regional) supplied 3 aces each.
J. Mulligan and
Gatling finished with 1 block each for the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden led in all categories but one versus Brooklyn, including kills (43-16), aces (13-1), assists (35-14), and digs (48-40). Rutgers-Camden's total of 43 kills tied a program record for 4
th all-time in a 3-set match.
Rutgers-Camden 3, John Jay 1
In the final match of the day, Rutgers-Camden found themselves down after 1 set of play versus John Jay.
After dropping the opening set 23-25, the Scarlet Raptors battled back to take the second set by the same score (25-23). Back and forth action saw many lead changes throughout the match and a score line that never extended either team's lead by a great margin.
Senior
Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA, West Adams Prep) led the Scarlet Raptors in kills during the final match with a team-high 15, as
M. Mulligan provided 14, and
Gatling added 7. Sophomore
Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) led Rutgers-Camden on the defensive side of the ball, providing 39 digs.
DiGiacomo's 39 digs was the second-highest total for any individual player in a 4-set match in program history.
Lowe again provided the team-high in assists for Rutgers-Camden, as she dished out 27.
Marcano also added 13.
Newman led the Scarlet Raptors in service aces with 4.
In the final 3 points of the match,
M. Mulligan provided a kill to tie the score at 25-25, before her and
Gatling rose above the Bulldogs' attack and won 2 straight points with blocks, securing the win for the Scarlet Raptors 27-25.
With both wins today, the Scarlet Raptors increase their record to 13-11 on the season. John Jay drops to 8-10 on the year, and Brooklyn drops to 13-10.
Rutgers-Camden returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play this week, as they host Kean University on Tuesday, October 17
th for a 7pm contest.
