UNION, N.J. (Oct. 21, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team was picked for sixth place in the pre-season New Jersey Athletic Conference poll, but the young Scarlet Raptors came within a whisker of finishing in fourth place before falling to Kean University, 5-4, here Saturday in their final NJAC match.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-7 overall and finishes 1-4 in the NJAC, good for fifth place. Kean improves to 7-5 and hangs on to fourth place, finishing with a 2-3 conference mark.
Rutgers-Camden hosts Penn State-Brandywine Sunday at 12 p.m. in its final match of the fall semester.
The Scarlet Raptors won at the first two doubles spots, with sophomores
Annalise Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and
Danielle Lemma (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) taking their match at first doubles by an 8-5 score. Freshmen
Jenna O'Lexy (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and
Anna Archut (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) won at second doubles, 8-6.
Kipp and O'Lexy won their matches at first and second singles, respectively. Kipp,
pictured above, posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory in her match, while O'Lexy captured a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Lemma retired in her third singles match, trailing 3-0 at the time.
Freshman
Lexi Sample (Newfield/Delsea Regional) dropped a tight 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) match at fourth singles and freshman
Abby Banner (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) lost, 6-1, 6-4, at fifth singles. Sample and Banner also dropped an 8-4 decision at third doubles.
Archut was defeated at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-0.
