Scarlet Raptors sweep Ramapo for first NJAC volleyball victory

MAHWAH, N.J. (Sept. 28, 2021) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team collected 44 kills, tied for the seventh-highest three-set total in program history, as it swept Ramapo College, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-15, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Tuesday night.

The win was the first conference victory of the season for the Scarlet Raptors, who improve to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in NJAC play. Their 9-4 record is the second-best 13-match mark in program history, trailing only the 10-3 team in 2012.

Ramapo falls to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Rutgers-Camden had lost seven straight matches against Ramapo before Tuesday, with the last win coming on Nov. 2, 2012 by a 3-2 score.

Trailing, 12-11, in the opening set, the Scarlet Raptors ran off four straight points to take the lead for good, aided by two Ramapo attack errors, a Roadrunner service error and an ace by sophomore middle hitter/outside hitter Isabella Choice. They wrapped up the set with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Dyamond Free. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kaliyah Moss had seven kills in the set, while senior setter Brinn Hassan and senior outside hitter Delaney Kolb notched 10 assists and six digs, respectively.

The second set was similar for the Scarlet Raptors, who scored five straight points midway through the set to erase a 14-13 deficit. The run started with a kill by senior defensive specialist Haley Novak to tie the score at 14-14. It continued with a kill by Moss, a bad Ramapo set, a kill by Choice and an ace by senior libero Morgan Fox. The Raptors wrapped up the set with a kill by sophomore outside hitter/right side Erica Nebrich.

The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good in the third set at 9-8 on a kill by Nebrich. They clinched the set and the match on an ace by Kolb.

Moss finished with her sixth double-double of the season, hitting .583 on her way to 14 kills and 11 digs. Choice had nine kills and hit .438, while Nebrich notched seven kills and hit .353. Free and senior middle hitter Devyn Cobb added five kills apiece.

Hassan finished with 21 assists, while Kolb had 11 digs and Fox added 10 digs.

The 21 assists gave Hassan an even 1,400 for her career, allowing her to become only the second player in program history to achieve that milestone. The program's all-time assist leader is Stephanie Miller (2009-12) with 2,692.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday when they host a non-conference tri-match with Marywood University and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Action begins at 11 a.m. with the Scarlet Raptors facing Marywood.
