York nine rallies to top Rutgers-Camden

YORK, Penn. (March 1, 2023) – The York College of Pennsylvania baseball team overcame a four-run deficit and exploded for six runs in the decisive seventh inning as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 11-5, in a non-conference game here Wednesday.

The Spartans improved to 3-1, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 1-1.

Rutgers-Camden built a 5-1 lead through four innings, but York tied the game in the bottom of the fifth before breaking open the game in the seventh. The Spartans collected six hits, one walk and two hit batters while sending 12 men to the plate in that frame. With the score tied at 5-5, the frame opened with a solo home run by sophomore second baseman Gabe Trevena, the first of six straight hits for York. Later in the frame, sophomore designated hitter Bryce Shaffer ripped a three-run triple.

Trevena and sophomore first baseman Andrew Santarpia both had three hits to lead the Spartans' 16-hit attack.

The game started off well for the Scarlet Raptors, who jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning, sparked by a one-out single from senior second baseman Danny Vazquez. One out later, senior designated hitter Jack Murphy launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. Murphy tied the program's single-season mark of nine home runs last year.

After York scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning off Scarlet Raptor senior John Kasper, Rutgers-Camden pieced together three hits and two Spartan errors to plate a pair of runs in the third inning. Freshman left fielder Jacob Watson drew a one-out walk, stole second and third bases, and scored on a throwing error by York's catcher. Vazquez, sophomore third baseman Frankie Romond and Murphy followed with singles, with Murphy's hit plating Vazquez.

Rutgers-Camden added another run in the fifth when Vazquez hit a run-scoring single, following walks to sophomore right fielder Chris Bonafiglia and Watson.

York exploded for five hits in a four-run fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The big blows were consecutive RBI doubles by senior center fielder Robby Elzinga, Trevena and sophomore third baseman Michael Tinneny. The Spartans put the game away two innings later.

Vazquez went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI for the Scarlet Raptors, while Murphy went 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday when they host FDU-Florham at 1 p.m.
