CAMDEN, NJ (March 4, 2023) – On a cold, windy day at the Camden Athletic Complex, the only things remaining hot were the bats of the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team.
The Scarlet Raptors ripped 15 hits, including four by senior catcher
Jake Guglielmi, as they defeated FDU-Florham, 15-2, in a non-conference game.
Rutgers-Camden, which received six strong innings from sophomore southpaw
Daniel Robeson (2-0), improves to 2-1. FDU-Florham falls to 3-2.
The Scarlet Raptors scored all the runs they needed in a first inning that featured three hits and a hit batsman. With one out, senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez and sophomore third baseman
Frankie Romond singled and senior designated hitter
Jack Murphy was hit by a pitch. Sophomore first baseman
Diego Salazar followed with a two-run double to left center and junior center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics plated Murphy with a ground out.
The Scarlet Raptors added an unearned run in the second inning and tacked on two more runs in the fourth, sparked by a leadoff single from Guglielmi, who went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs on the day. He hit back-to-back triples in the seventh and eighth innings for four RBIs, including a bases-clearing shot in the eighth. He tied a program single-game record, held by many players, with his two triples and became the second Scarlet Raptor this season with a two-triple game. Romond accomplished the feat in the season opener against Delaware Valley University on Feb. 23.
While the offense was taking advantage of its 15 hits and seven FDU errors, Robeson was mowing down the Devils. He hurled five innings of three-hit shutout ball until allowing three hits and two runs in the sixth inning. He finished with a six-hit, six-inning outing, allowing two earned runs and two walks, while striking out nine.
After the Devils' two-run sixth inning cut their deficit to 6-2, Rutgers-Camden bounced right back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Vazquez. A team tri-captain, Vazquez had another big game, going 3-for-5 with one run and three RBIs. He has started his season with a trio of three-hit games and owns a .600 batting average and a team-leading eight RBIs.
The Raptors' three-run seventh inning featured back-to-back RBI triples by Guglielmi and junior shortstop
Giacomo Antonicello, in addition to a run-scoring wild pitch. Antonicello finished the day going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, collecting three-quarters of a cycle, missing only with a home run.
The four-run eighth featured an RBI fielder's choice by junior pinch-hitter
Dustin Bellis and Guglielmi's three-run triple.
Freshman
Gavin Cunard worked two perfect innings, striking out three, in relief of Robeson. Freshman
Dylan Oliver closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, allowing only one hit, that was erased by a double play.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Tuesday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
