CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2016) – Two New Jersey Athletic Conference teams, including host Rutgers University-Camden, posted victories on a blazing hot opening day of the 16th annual Cialella Soccer Classic here Saturday. The event was named for former Rutgers-Camden student-athlete, coach and athletic director Dr. Ed Cialella.
Kean University defeated The College at Brockport, 3-1, in the first game and Rutgers-Camden rode a hat trick by junior
Aaron Muse (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) to a 4-0 win over Farmingdale State College in the nightcap.
Sunday's pre-determined matchups pit Kean against Farmingdale State at 2 p.m., followed by Rutgers-Camden against Brockport at 4:30 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden 4, Farmingdale State 0
Muse notched the Scarlet Raptors' first hat trick since
Mike Ryan scored four goals against Misericordia University on Sept. 23, 2015. It was another junior, however, who notched the eventual game-winning goal, as
Steve Karakitsios (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) took a feed into the box from junior
Clayton Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) and fired a shot that was saved by Farmingdale State keeper Jeff Valencia. Karakitsios gathered in the rebound and tapped it into the net for his second career goal and first game-winner, which came at 15:30.
The second half turned into the
Aaron Muse show as the Scarlet Raptor junior notched three goals to increase his team leading total to five. Only 5:24 into the second half, Karakitsios sent a long ball from the right touchline toward the left post, where Muse made a spectacular bicycle kick to make it a 2-0 game. A little over two minutes later, Taylor fed a perfect pass inside the box for a tap-in by Muse at the left post. Muse completed his hat trick at 57:14 when junior
Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) dribbled in on goal from the right end line, fed a perfect pass to the center of the box and hit Muse at the goal line for an easy third tally.
Rutgers-Camden outshot Farmingdale, 17-5, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) and junior
Kellen Groover (Roebling, NJ/Life Center Academy) combined for the shutout, with Groover making the only save necessary. Brett played the opening 73:40, while Groover played the final 16:20. For the Rams, Valencia made five saves.
The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 2-0-1, while the Rams fall to 1-3.
Kean 3, Brockport 1
In the opening game, Kean received goals from Michael Vargas, Erick Reyes and Kenny Rocha as it raised its record to 4-1 and dropped Brockport to 0-3.
After a long serve from Alex Noriega into the box, Vargas headed in the game's first goal at 21:15, but Brockport tied the game at 29:27 on a 30-yard shot into the lower left corner by Jake Fusilli.
Kean took the lead for good moments later, scoring at 31:54 on a goal by Reyes, following some fancy moves in the box. The Cougars added their final goal in the 48th minute after Rocha broke into the box from the right side and shot into the far corner.
Kean outshot Brockport, 19-11, forcing the Golden Eagles' keeper Joseph Romano to make seven saves. Brad Wilkins made six saves in the Cougars' net.
