CAMDEN, N.J. (April 16, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team rode the outstanding pitching of southpaws
Daniel Robeson and
Jacob Brennan as it swept past New Jersey City University here Sunday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Robeson started and worked seven strong innings in the Scarlet Raptors' 5-1 victory in the opening game. Brennan, meanwhile, pitched six shutout relief innings in the nightcap as Rutgers-Camden completed its sweep with an 8-5 win.
The Scarlet Raptors improved to 19-11 overall and 5-5 in the NJAC, while the Gothic Knights fell to 10-19 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at Arcadia University.
Rutgers-Camden 5, New Jersey City 1
Robeson worked seven innings, allowing nine hits and three walks, but limiting the Gothic Knights to only one run as he raised his record to 4-2. He struck out five.
Senior
Jared Vega picked up his third save, pitching two shutout innings. He allowed one hit and two walks, while fanning one.
Rutgers-Camden scored a run in the first inning after freshman right fielder
Jacob Watson hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a fly to right by senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez. He scored on a ground out by sophomore third baseman
Andrew Brown.
NJCU bunched three hits to tie the game in the top of the second inning, but Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good in a two-run fourth inning. With one out, junior center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics singled and sophomore left fielder
Chris Bonafiglia was hit by a pitch. Sophomore first baseman
Diego Salazar singled to load the bases before freshman catcher
Evan Carbone delivered an RBI single to right field. Junior shortstop
Billy Richards followed with a sacrifice fly.
Richards singled and scored an unearned run in the seventh inning and the Raptors added their final run in the eighth inning. Uzdanovics triples and scored on a ground out by Bonafiglia.
Uzdanovics went 3-for-4 with two runs to pace the Raptor attack.
Rutgers-Camden 8, New Jersey City 5
In a wild second game, both teams scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning. NJCU's production featured four RBIs from grad student center fielder Ricky Voss, who had a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-run single in the second. Rutgers-Camden scored on an error and a fielder's choice by senior designated hitter
Jack Murphy in the first inning. In the second, the Raptors loaded the bases on singles by Salazar, senior catcher
Jake Guglielmi and Richards. They plated one run on a wild pitch before the NJCU staff walked three straight batters, with Vazquez and Brown collecting one RBI apiece.
Brennan entered the game with no outs and two runners on base in the third inning and shut down the Gothic Knights for six innings before freshman
Gavin Cunard hurled a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.
Rutgers-Camden broke the 5-5 tie in the sixth inning, sparked by a Vazquez single and stolen base. He advanced to third base on a two-out balk and scored on a single by Uzdanovics.
A leadoff double by Guglielmi sparked a two-run Raptor rally in the seventh inning. He scored on a single by Watson, who stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Watson scored on another error.
Guglielmi went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs for the Scarlet Raptors, while Richards was 2-for-3.
