ABINGTON Penn. (March 26, 2017) – The Penn State-Abington lacrosse team scored three straight goals midway through the first half to break a 2-2 tie and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 18-6, here Sunday.
The win lifted the Nittany Lions to 4-0, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-3.
After Abington took the lead with two goals in a 21-second span close to nine minutes into the contest, Rutgers-Camden fought back over the next three minutes with goals by junior midfielder
Nicole Martin (Delran, NJ/Delran) and sophomore midfielder
Taylor Reader (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) to knot the game at 2-2. They were assisted by sophomore midfielder
Jessica Mayer (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and freshman
Jennie Klanchar (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional), respectively.
The Nittany Lions took the lead for good with 16:45 remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder
Veronica Baez (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland). Baez added another unassisted goal at five minutes later and Hayes scored an unassisted tally 43 seconds after that, giving the Nittany Lions a 5-2 lead. By halftime, Penn State-Abington led, 9-4.
Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to 9-6 by scoring the first two goals of the second half, as sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Ennis (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) and Reader found the net. The Nittany Lions, however, scored the final nine goals of the game, sparked by two straight from sophomore midfielder
Marah Hayes (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood), who finished the game with six goals and four assists.
The Scarlet Raptors received three goals from Ennis and two from Reader. Martin added a goal and an assist, while Mayer and Klanchar had one assist apiece.
Junior defender
Megan Everett (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) collected six ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Ennis added five ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Martin notched five draw controls and added two ground balls.
Freshman goalie
Caitlyn Snyder (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) faced 34 shots and made seven saves.
Rutgers-Camden plays a 7 p.m. game at Delaware Valley University Tuesday night and a 4 p.m. game at Neumann University Thursday.
